Scrap or repair

I have a 2005 Vauxhall Vectra diesel, 69k. I've had it since it was 1yrs old and have never had any problems with it.

The water pump is faulty (according to RAC) which caused the engine temp to go into the red zone. The engine is now very noisy. The RAC pointed out that there are metal flacks in the engine oil.

This sounds very expensive. Should I scrap the car?

Only you can decide if it is beyond economical repair, however I add, my neighbour until recently had a 57 plate Astra and now has a 53 plate Pug, I asked him why he had changed and he described similar to you in that there was metal in the engine and he had had the car regularly serviced, seems from other posts on the forum that the some Vaux engines are not living as long as they should.

Run it till it's knackered and in the mean time look at getting a recon engine fitted.

if bearings in engine have picked up as described by the recovery agent then car is beyond economic repair but i would get the opinion of a bricks and mortar garage rather than just an itinerant driver on bonus

Engine now very noisy?
Are we sure it's the engine noisy and not the impeller within the water pump? The latter often sounds like a screeching.

You may be lucky and get away with replacing the pump before the rest of it takes the engine with it.

Changing the water pump, oil and filter aren't fortunes and you can either mark it as fixed, or you run it till it drops.
