Redundancy, tax credits and benefits

I was made redundant on the 5th of August and am due to be paid in lieu of notice this coming week. I haven't contacted the HMRC yet as I've been unsure what to do and I had hoped to get a temporary position that was due to start on Monday but has fallen through.
I looked online and it showed I need to advise the Tax Credits office within 30 days of any changes in circumstances. I'm really hoping to get sorted out with another job within this time, in which case I would just need to advise them of the new employer. But if I do sign on to receive unemployment benefit to get some money coming in (my previous employer advised I will be paid my redundancy pay part way through next month), will they automatically advise Tax Credits too?
Any help would be appreciated so much as I am lost as to how things work having not been in this position before.
