How best to fill holes in brick

Hi All

It's a lovely day and I want to fill some holes in the brick outside my house. These are drill holes from things which were clearly previously attached to the house - hanging baskets I assume.

What's the best way to fill these? Mortar? Silicone?

I'd like to get it right so would appreciate any tips.

Thanks
Maureen

I'd use mortar for holes in the mortar and for holes in the brick - either brown silicone or mortar depending on the brick colour and which best blends in.

For the silicone - look for a 'low modulus, neutral cure' builders silicone, it's slightly more expensive but better than the standard stuff.

I'd use mortar for both, personally. Silicone on brick can easily smear all over the place, and make a right mess. Quite a dry mortar mix, press in firmly, tidy up immediately. If you have a spare brick bit, or powder from drilling, a paste of that will make perfect concealer, leaving bricks to weather evenly. It leaves no trace whatsoever. For textured brick, you can use a spare to imprint the pattern onto your fill, but you won't need this for small screwholes.
