Single/Double DIN
A while ago, I removed the maker's double-DIN size stereo from my car, and put in a single DIN aftermarket unit.
I then purchased, on eBay, a single DIN storage cubby, and tried to place this in what I thought was the remaining single DIN space. It wouldn't fit. Too big.
So either the maker's stereo was smaller than double DIN, or the new aftermarket unit/storage cubby is/are larger than single DIN.....
Anyone else had similar probs?

Depends on the stereo but some are smaller than double DIN. I believe Fords are one such example but my VW has full double DIN stereo.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0

How much was the difference?
I removed a double DIN unit which was in a cage 9.4cm high, with a flange of 10cm. The front panel of the unit itself is 10.5cm
I've tried two aftermarket 'single DIN' stereos, one of which has a cage 5.3cm high, with a flange of 5.5cm, and the unit front panel coming in at 5.8cm. The other is installed at present, so more difficult to measure exactly.
The remaining space in the dash with one single DIN unit installed is 4cm. Every 'single DIN' storage cubby I can find on eBay seems to be 5cm high. I've just measured the one I bought, and the body of it is 5cm high, with a flange of 6cm.
Like this - 5.6cm high

googler - you've bought something generic - you need to be specific. What's the car?! You need a fascia adaptor for your specific model and year of car. And maybe the 1DIN needs to go in the middle of the 2DIN, not top or bottom.0

2001 SAAB 9-3, but all my googling thus far only comes up with adaptors for post-2004 models.
I foolishly assumed that two single DIN units would fit into a double DIN space, it seems.....0 -
thinking out loud a radio is "x" mm , but its facia overlaps by another "z" mm at the top and the bottom
so a double din would be "x" and have 2 x "z"
however if you place 2 single din on top of each other you end up with z x z z x z .
so there is an additional "z" in the equasion
as your space will not take 2 x units is the missing measurement the overhang (top/bottom) of one of the units if so you will have to trim its flange down0 -
Trimming the flange on the storage cubby won't work, as not even the body of it will fit in the remaining space.0

Hi Googler - I couldn't find an adaptor either. I did find a couple of SAAB forums so it would be a good idea to get into those and see what everyone else has done, you can't be the first to want to change stereo. Closest I could find, like you, was 2005>0
