Excel: Add custom data labels to a XY scatter chart?

I want to do a "one dimensional XY scatterplot", labelling each datapoint with a text label of my choosing.

I've sorta done it in excel (see screenshot).



The blue dots are exactly how/where I want them, but I want to be able to (automatically) add the datalabels illustrated in red. It doesn't matter if they overlap.

Any ideas ?

If you have excel 2013 there may be a way

Right click a data point on the chart and choose Format Data Labels

In the Format Data Labels panel which appears, select Label Options at the top and then the last (column chart) icon (Label Options) just below.

In the Label Contains list, tick Value from Cells and click the Select Range button to select the cells containing the labels you wish to use.

In 2010 you might have to do it with a macro
