On the account application form its says:

This application takes about five minutes. Before you start, please make sure you have the following information to hand:

Bank Details - the sort code and account number for a UK Bank/Building Society that accepts Direct Debits and Faster Payments and for which you hold a cheque book with the account holders name displayed on the cheque. (This will be your Linked Account) -

A cheque book - To complete your application process, your opening deposit must be sent to us in the form of a cheque. We ask for this in order to verify your Linked Account details.

According to the account T&C's it looks like they are asking for a cheque (from the linked account) for the opening deposit in order to verify the Linked Account details.

I opened mine with a cheque from my linked account so cant suggest a way arount this (that I'm aware) other than - could your son not ask Halifax to issue a cheque book on the account he holds with them, failing that open a cheque book account with them.

I had to request a chequebook for the account that I wanted to use as the linked account.

I received the chequebook, drew the first cheque in the book in favour of the BM account and posted it ......and received a telephone call from the bank's Fraud Dept asking if I had issued the cheque........

Chequebook is required unfortunately. BM are also very slow to open. Virgin was much smoother, look into it, not much difference in rate.

Thanks for all replies. Seems rather a lot of unnecessary administration and expense for a nbank to issue a cheque book for just one cheque. Will look at the virgin one, thanks
