Halifax mortgage via IFA

Options
Hi

We were written to by the Halifax to tell us we had PPI through our mortgage. News to us! I have found the original agreement made with an IFA who applied to Halifax for the mortgage. In the agreement it clearly says that we did not want any payment protection insurance as we were already covered.

I wrote to Halifax to begin the process to reclaim. They wrote back to say that this was agreed by the IFA.

I then wrote to the IFA to say that our agreement was for no PPI but Halifax said that we have been paying this. They wrote back to say "we didn't arrange this" and included a copy of that original agreement!

I then asked the Halifax to provide the documentation sent to them by IFA but they ducked the question saying that it was IFA that sold the policy and not their problem. Totally unsure how this application would have been made between them (in 2006)?

Not sure how to proceed. Can anyone offer some advice?

TIA

It's not entirely unknown for Lenders to add products in error however PPI cover for a mortgage (MPPI) is usually a separate payment so would have thought you would have spotted it. Suggest you make a formal complaint to Halifax enclosing a photocopy of the original agreement (this is on the assumption that the "agreement" you refer to is a document the IFA would have sent to Halifax and not just to you) and see what they come back with.

it is highly unlikely an IFA would use Halifax for insurance (for a number of reasons). I'm not even sure the Halifax product is available to IFAs to use.

    That would match expectation.

If the IFA said it wasnt them and the documentation shows it wasnt them then you should go back to Halifax. If Halifax still refuse then refer it to the FOS.
