When I log in without secure key and I have to log in with password but when it asks me second to last password, I am confused e.g if password is blossom1, then is second to last password m. Thanks

Yes, m. I've not seen it ask such yet though...just "8th character" etc

    HSBC does use strange terminology.

I think First Direct use penultimate rather than 2nd last. Quite why they can't ask for the character number I don't know.

Some probably have 16-20 characters. unless they're all the same length you'd need to count how many there is to know that character 17 is actually the penultimate

Counting how many characters there are in a string is a doddle for a computer.

It is an odd system. I've always assumed it is because they did't want to reveal the length of the password for security reasons.

  • Oh dear - when asked (or rather forced) to set up the new password a few weeks ago I decided to use a random character one generated by Keepass. If I had know it was going to use this first/second/fourth selection thing I would have used something much simpler. I intend anyway to always log in with the secure key, and that will be far quicker than this other way..

Just change your password to something simpler.

I'm not sure that it's that much more difficult to count the 17th character than it is the 16th.
