Where I live in the south east there is a lack of council housing and now some of the private estates have a large percentage of tennants on LHA. There is always going to be a need for low cost or subsidised housing and if you believe the argument that it's much cheaper to buy than rent in the long term, surely it must be better for the government to own rather then rent.

the government shouldn't be in competition with the people to see who can accumulate the most.

    the problem is just that

if your council added 5% of the housing stock to itself you would likely say the same, if it added another 5% you would likely say the same

There are councils now which are close to 50% owners of the homes in their area and people still say....there is a lack of council homes

I would wager if a council owned 100% of the stock in its area people would still say there is a lack of council homes

what this tells us, is that there are a lack of HOMES not a lack of council homes

Many council tenants couldn't get a private tenancy, so selling them off would just make a huge number of people homeless.
And as we've seen over the last 30 years, selling off houses to the private sector has just lined the pockets of greedy private landlords with housing benefit.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Seeing how that there is a shortage that is obviously true but transferring properties from council to private does nothing to increase supply.

They should be trying to reduce their overall spending.

there will always be a demand for heavily subsidised spacious and high quality housing that is maintained free for life.

there is no requirement for low cost of subsidised housing although there is a requirement to subsidise poor people in some circumstances.

You seem to think there is only one model for social housing the present one which isn't the case. Do you own your own house if so do you think it is cheaper in the long term?

An interesting take. Especially re confidence and security to build without worrying about losing stock to RTB. Which is the better housing policy.. Hmmmm.... Any thoughts ?

I am referring to the real world

if you are thinking about a different model then that's a different thing upon which I may have a view.
