Make your own headboard?

Options
I need a headboard for a 4 foot bed and they are so expensive. Has anyone ever made their own? Any suggestions how I might go about it?

Many thanks,

Rebecca

Hang a wooden curtain pole behind the bed - same width as the bed - get 2 pillows for double bed, in pretty cases and hang them from the pole - you'll need to add something to the side of each pillow obviously, just a strip of toning fabric forming a loop to thread onto the pole would do. if you're good at sewing, make the pillowcases and loops to match.

or you could take a piece of timber, cover it in foam and fabric and screw to the wall at the top of the bed

Edited to say, the pole needs to be set at the right height so that the pillows hang where you lean against them if you sit in bed reading.
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

i've seen on the style shows loads of times where they get a piece of MDF and put the foam/fabric on - always looks fab!

another idea (robbed again from tv show) - is to get some MDF (the fire retardant stuff i think), drill holes in it and then from the back, put fiary lights through the holes - looked pretty good, would suit a kids bedroom as a sort of night light

    good luck! :D

I did the curtain pole thing, however I used the foam from my son's old cot mattress that I was going to chuck out instead of pillows, then covered that in some nice brown and pale blue brocade fabric from Dunelm Mill and hung the mattress off the rail with strips of the same fabric. It looks great. I used two offcuts of the same fabric and some pva adhesive to cover the shades on two cheap Ikea table lamps for the bedside tables.

If I go in my bedroom and sort of squint, it looks like a posh hotel !! :rotfl:

I bought a damaged wardrobe door from MFI for a couple of quid, I just fitted that sideways to the wall, it matches the decor and other furniture.

The damaged part is below the matress top height, so out of sight.
