    Choose your current playback device

I've tried this thanks and it makes no difference what bitrate it's set to. Think I've tried most things by googling. I can see a return to Windows 7 later, which is a shame as I do like Windows 10 (but my p.c. obviously does not!).

I agree ... it's probably something really simple, but what I wonder?

Have you checked the Realtek HD Audio Manager? - Just type it into the start menu to find it.
Not sure anything in there could affect, but worth a look..

You may have already tried this however another option is to try the drivers directly from Realtek:

    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

Sorry Fightsback - I've already been there.

    Thanks for the suggestion though.
