Coasting in neutral may feel cheaper but it uses more fuel.

I've not seen a free-wheel on anything since then.

Some newer Porsches with semi-auto (flappy paddle) gearboxes do it. You can expect this on more of these gearboxes I guess. They think it saves fuel, but in my book, having the choice saves fuel.
zero fuel use on overrun has been around for decades

Pretty much since the days of fuel injection. That would be at latest 90s onwards.

My 1980s Maestro used to cut off the fuel with a solenoid valve that vented the float chamber to the inlet manifold, but it had to tickle a bit of fuel through now and again to keep the manifold walls wet, so when you went back on the pedal there wasn't an embarrassing pause. Not quite zero on overrun.

They were pretty hard to get through the MOT when the emissions test first came out too, pretty much everybody who ran one owned the original yellow Gunsons Gastester (I bet mine is still in the garage somewhere)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Ye because that's ever gonna happen!

I daresay the guy driving the Glasgow bin lorry thought he'd never get caught out with his health issues. It's when it all goes wrong and there's a smash that these things will emerge, and that's when you find yourself in the deepest sh|t.
