I have a new PC and it came with the upgrade to Windows 10. I also bought Office home and student 2013 which I have installed.
However, I cannot use the email at all on Win 10, it is driving me crazy, everyone who has tried to help me has had me install and uninstall different browsers etc- but I think I accept now that I really really want Outlook 201lity to use folders to keep my work emails separately.
Upgrading is going to cost me around £60 a year- but I've been told there are real workable alternatives- if so, can anyone suggest one please?
I use Virgin mail, I like to have my emails downloaded where I can deal with them offline, print what I need for work etc.

One alternative is gmail. You can set it to retrieve email from other accounts. Try it and see if it suits.0

Hmm, will I be able to buy it as I'm not technically a student-- suppose it is worth a try!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I guess this is the default Windows 10 "mail app" that you're referring too which is grim. Main 2 free options are Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail (the latter may look a little bit more like the other MS programs that you have). However, I cannot use the email at all on Win 10, it is driving me crazy,
Both can access multiple mail boxes. Regarding accessing mail offline you could use POP but IMAP is the latest (and best IMHO) email protocol. A possible problem with IMAP for you is that mail may not be stored locally by default. This, albeit old, post from the Thunderbird forums might be useful...
What version of Thunderbird? If you are using a 3.1.x version messages from the IMAP account ARE downloaded to files on the local computer if Thunderbird is set to do that under Tools->Account Settings->Synchronization & Storage. Note though that deleting messages from the Inbox (or other folder) will result in that message being deleted from the locally stored synchronization file.
"To do what you describe, you can set up filters in Thunderbird to copy all messages from the folders of your choice to folders under the Local Folders "account" in Thunderbird. Message folders in that structure are independent of actions on the messages in the IMAP folders."

I have downloaded Thunderbird- it is exactly what I wanted- I can't believe it was as simple as that. Have set up my work folders and configured it to keep the mail on my desktop rather than online- hurrah
