Moving out

We are moving abroad in the next week or so for a few months and have some family moving into the house to look after it while we are a way.
While in the house all bills are being put in their names but they are not paying any rent as such.

We phoned BT to ask that the current number be put into their name (as we wish to keep it for our eventual return) and was told that it is possible but they will have to phone BT themselves to arrange it which is fair enough.

They phoned this morning and were told that they would have to have a new number as they were new customers (coming from a property with no phone line previously)

Anyone know which of these 2 BT bods is correct?

Thanks.
