My new cordless optical keyboard & mouse from Dell for my new Vostro system are locked and do not work. Unable to get past log in on PC as Key board does not work. Tried checking connections and with different batteries and reinserting the bluetooth key.
Dell are sending me a new Keyboard & Mouse as in warranty but just wondering if other people have had this problem and if I'm better going for a traditional wired keyboard/mouse.

Wireless keyboards and mice introduce problems that didnt really need solving when people were tied to the pc with wires.
Check the receiver is conected to the PC properly and drivers if needed are installed.
Batteries in the devices are good
Are you iin range?
use the sync buttons on the receiver and keyboard and mouse.
Just to many things to go wrong, get your new set and flog them and buy yourslef a nice wired keyboard. A wireless mouse isnt too bad but not really required if you are sat at a desk. Logitac gave me a wireless desktop a few years ago I never used it and gave it my sister for a pc where she has no desk 80% of the problems she has are due to the keyboard and mouse, normally the batteries are dead0 -
Hi,
Got the same problem here too and not sure what to do. The machine is 18 months old and not under warranty.
We've tried putting in a PS2 keyboard and mouse (via a USB adapter) and that still doesn't work. Aren't keyboard and mice meant to be plug and play under XP?
I'm trying to borrow a USB keyboard and mouse to see if that helps ... but if the keyboard and mouse refuse to work then what can you do? Help!
Thanks in advance, any advice appreciated.

PS2 devices can't be swapped without rebooting the PC. so shut down put the new mouse and keyboard in then boot the PC. it should work then.0

Thanks LittleJohn.
There are no PS/2 ports on the Dell Dimension 3100 so we plugged them into a PS/2 to USB adapter and put that in a USB port. It didn't work!
I'm still struggling with it.
I'd be happy to do a complete restore (there are only a few photos and spreadsheets on there which have fairly recent backups) but I'm not sure if that'd do the trick so am keen to avoid the bu&&eration factor of that if I don't need to ... and what if that doesn't work?
I've thought of getting a PCI-USB card (£15ish) and installing that. PCWorld adverts say they are plug and play so hopefully the keyboard and mouse plugged in there would be instantly recognised without having to install drivers (tough with no keyboard!). Does anyone know if that sounds sensible and has a chance of working?
Is it just Windows XP that has just frozen or is it a problem with the USB ports/drivers? Without a keyboard and mouse it's sooo annoying not being able to check anything.
Here's hoping there's someone out there who can help.

After some serious google-ing it's fixed. Someone on a site somewhere mentioned that the USB sender/receiver unit should be put back into the same USB slot as it was first in.
So, there were only 4 choices and one of them worked! Success.
I'm still confused though as I thought that it was plug and play so would/should work in any USB slot? Maybe the drivers get confused but surely they shouldn't? Does this mean that I can never have a wired keyboard and a wired mouse now? I wonder if this is peculiar to Dell machines.
Anyway we're happy to have it working so I won't lose any more hair worrying about it.
I hope this may help someone else in the future.0
