  • My daughter has no formal qualifications other than a handful of GCSEs and she has just qualified as a prison officer. Very hard work, but there are excellent opportunities and she's loving it.

My brother used to be a signal man on the trains, he then went on to become a train driver which he still does, he has a couple of O levels which are of no use to his job.

Have you thought about taking courses that could improve your chances?

My old neighbour trained to be a plumber at our local college, it was in the evening so she could continue working, shes doing quite well now and employers three people and has an apprentice.

I started out as a mechanic, I didn't need any formal qualifications, just an interest in the area and a good work ethic.

Maybe put your interests on here, some fresh eyes may be able to suggest some career opportunities.

hmmm it really depends on the role. For a doctor, sure.

But given that in the UK just 30%~ had a degree, there's a big percentage (majority really!) who don't have a degree and yet are still employed and making a decent living.

A degree is maybe an easier foot in the door, but someone with experience can look just as favourably (not as the doctor).

There are some companies that place a lot of emphasis on graduates, good on them. There are a lot of other business that don't care much about it.

We've all got a bit sidetracked by the degree thing. The OP was talking about jobs for people with no qualifications and I'm pretty sure that this is a comparatively small minority.

Many people working in most of those fields would have some kind of qualification, even if not a degree.

ohhh then it's pretty much all jobs with the exclusion of very few like doctor, scientist, etc!

I reckon most jobs today they only put 'degree' as a requirement hoping that those applying have mastered basic working skills!!
Most with a degrees end up working in jobs outside the field of study...

Become a train driver. They teach you to do the job and the pay is very reasonable. I'm too old to make it worth their while to teach me now but I wish I'd done that way back. (And I've got a degree, makes no difference either way though.)

Nice idea but these jobs are rarer than hen's teeth. Out of 400 applicants only one will succeed.

You're not taking the word of someone trying to sell his book are you?

The best way in is to get a station job, Customer Service Assistant or equivalent, and then you can apply for driver internally.

Nope. I - and others - have been trying for years. You really make it sound like a person can just stroll into this sort of job when the fact is they infrequently advertised and highly sought after.
