no formal qualifications needed

A friend of mine is training to become a 'railway signaller'.
Not even a job I'd ever heard of.
He only has (rather bad) GCSE's results, but he passed some assessments and is now being paid to train and is set to land a rather well paid job.

Considering i'd never heard of that job, I thought there must be other 'careers' out there where you don't need a degree/A levels, but can get the job through passing some sort of assessment or training instead?

I can't think of any though. Can you add any you know of in this thread?

thanks

There are a large amount of jobs where you can get there without a degree however it can be much harder to get onto that first rung of the ladder.

I do have A Levels (and the rarely heard of S levels) but no degree and have been a Change/ Programme Manager for over a decade now. I'm in the minority of not having a degree (or MBA / ACCA) but its only once been raised at an interview. I got into by being in the right place at the right time and catching someone's eye inside the company I was working for at the time.

There are loads of jobs of course where you don't need qualifications but I'm guessing you have a salary level in mind. What would that be?
  • Can anyone point me in the right direction please? I am currently living with my partner and two kids aged 7 and my partner claims JSA for us both. I am due to start college at the end of the month and have been awarded a bursary of 189.54 a fortnight and won't be entitled to housing benefit does anyone know if there are any benefits I or we can claim as this just isn't going to work at all. Any help appreciated thank you
  • I recently saw a job advertisement by B..ts for a Trainee Pharmacy Dispenser, working under a fixed term contract even ..that doesn't mention needing grades as an exacting requirement :) looks like you can do NVQ's on the job

Have you never got inquisitive of these mates then pinpin? asked them how they think they got through?

    Not particularly.
I guess anything above minimum wage to start would be good, and that has the potential to get higher and higher.

A 'career' as opposed to a job.

Usually I just load lorries or wrap pallets or sweep floors for a job which is minimum wage and no opportunities for a better wage.

    Agreed.
That's why I was asking about job like the railway signaller where you don't appear to need any qualifications, but upon passing an 'assessment' and then some training, you can jump straight into a fairly well paid 'career'.

However, I'd like other ideas other than the signaller job

I think maybe a fireman might not need any qualifications but it's based on assessments and test.

I have 'O' Levels and then later an ONC, and managed to get into local government, where I worked my way up the grades.
I managed to work in finance without possessing any more qualifications, and then moved to the private sector and worked in insurance, accountany and legal accounts, gradually working my way up to manager level.
It does take time, but I am sure that in London someone without a degree could work their way up to a £50K salary in time.

I was really interested in this so had a look at the information about these assessments. They sound really difficult and demanding. Network Rail are obviously looking for people with very specific natural abilities which exams wouldn't measure.

Well done to your friend for finding a career which is such a good fit to his talents
