Housing benefit can be claimed whether or not you are looking for work. That'll pay the rent.
Council tax can be reduced to almost nothing.
Both of us are unemployed and JSA is our only source of income.
We do not get housing benefit, and our mortgage will only be paid for a couple more months.
Our council tax is 38% of the full figure, so not "almost nothing".
The reality is very very harsh when you are facing it.:(0 -
I travel 40 mins to work at the moment & next week I am moving to another store as the one I am at is closing down & the travel time will then be nearly 1 hour, but I have no problem with that as at least I have a job0

Maybe I haven't come across it yet, but why would employers even care how far you live? So long you do your hours and deliver and you have references... why would location matter?0

I think that I was aked about this in EVERY interview I attended when I worked in London.
The employer should be interested in these aspects of a potential employee, because it will potentially affect attendance and possibly being late for work on a regular basis.
I would therefore reassure the interviewer that my journey was "do able".0 -
Most journeys are "do-able" as long as you give yourself some time, I always aim to be at work at least 30 mins before my shift, sometime I get there before that0

Thank you! Another 'new' thing to learn about the Uk!
I think it has a lot to do with main stream work ethics (must be a problem here!) as I have never been asked that question anywhere else unless it was as a social chit chat rather than a factor determining my suitability for a job.
I suppose if they ask about it, it must be a problem with employees taking jobs they cannot commit to it! How bizarre!0 -
THANK YOU ALL for responses. patman99 I already started building your app. I will see after the interview today what I am going to do.The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear0

Dress smartly, put on a smile and go door knocking. It's suprising what you can scare up. There must be factory work somewhere.
Take that 'ethical hacker' bit off you CV. People only see 'hacker' and take you for a little boy, not a professional. Just because you have the skill doesnt mean you need to tell everyone you have it, that comes later.
The work in IT at the moment is in SQL and customer relationship databases. I know many firms who are looking for apprentices to take on because they simply cant get the people from University. Aim your CV at apprentice level to a software vendor. Check out Dynamics CRM, there is more work than you can poke a stick at and we cant keep up with it. Most big businesses now use CRM systems. Dont bother with Goldmine or any of the piddly offerings, go straight for Microsoft.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

Good luck with the interview but, just in case, have a contingency plan - have you applied for catering jobs, waiting tables, pub / bar work, cleaning etc?
Being in London means you're ideally located for these areas - particularly in holiday season.0
