Volkswagen Polo 1.4 S 2003 - Timing Belt Question

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone can help me. I am looking at buying a 2nd hand VW Polo 2003 model, 21,43miles on the clock. The seller is advertising it was a Recent Timing belt change. I don't know much about cars, but from what I have read the timing belt of this model is changed around 40,000/60,000 miles. Should I be worried that maybe the mileage has been clocked?
Thanks
Matt

It is mileage or time which ever comes first.

You should be more worried why a 12 year car has only done 21k. Cars don't like short journeys and I am guessing this has been driven by miss daisy.
  • Thanks worried jim. Yes, the seller is grandaughter of passed Grandmother. Might revert to my original plan of looking for something within 5 years old and less than 50,000 miles...

When I bought my father's 14-year-old Clio it had only done 26,000 miles (genuine, he had it from new) and just had the cam belt changed. He did everything by the letter of the handbook. I didn't want a Clio, I just wanted him to stop driving before he killed someone, but it's actually a good car. It's now done 36,000 miles, given no trouble at all, and sails through the MOT every time.
