Recording on USB from TV

My TV has a USB connector from which I can record to a USB flash drive. At least this is what the manual states. Can someone please help me with the following questions:
1 Can I view the recorded content on my laptop? Or will these be in a different format which a laptop may not be able to read. If so, are there any applications to convert formats?
2 Does it have to be a USB flash drive? Can I use a portable drive instead connected to the TV with a USB cable.
3 Difficult question to answer, but how much storage would a typical 2 hour movie require.
Sorry about all the questions but I need to know all the facts to make the right decision.

"MY APPS SmartShareTM Recorded TV You can view the recordings stored on a USB HDD device
For external USB HDD, it is recommended that you use devices with a rated voltage of less than 5 V and a rated current of less than 500 mA.
It is recommended to use a USB hub or hard disk drive with power supplied. (If the power supplied is not enough, the USB storage device may not be detected properly.)
It is recommended that you use USB Flash Drives of 32 GB or less and USB HDD of 2 TB or less.
Data in USB storage device can be damaged so be sure to back up important files to other devices. Data maintenance is the user's responsibility and the manufacturer is not responsible for data loss"
also read the dnla section and pay attention to the policy on voice functions if privacy is important to you, the level of snooping is creepy

different TVs can read , and in this case write different formats of vid files , for example my TV can read AVI files from a USB , whilst the daughters can only see and read MP4 ,
I suggest you record a few mins of tv , take it to the computer and see what sort of file it has written0 -

Usually in a different format and you may not be able to read the drive in windows .
