Help! Flip Top Waste Stuck in Bathroom Sink

Our bathroom sink has what's called a flip top waste/plug that looks like this one:

Last time someone pushed the plug in (to fill it with water) it got stuck and now won't budge. We have tried hitting it with a hammer and the handle of a screwdriver but it won't budge. Any suggestions on how on earth I can remove it?

You need to get at it from underneath the sink. Disconnect this bit, which will be (say) 6-8" long .... by undoing the fittings between it and the next bit (the U bend?). Then take it out, poke it around to find out what went wrong, replace it or fix it, then shove it back in the hole and reconnect.

Or .... my favourite option .... get a little man in.
  • Thanks! I want to give it a go before I call the plumber in, much more MSE :)
