Trips and places to go in Crete

Hi all,

We have just booked a holiday in Georgioupolis, Crete (£300pp for 14 night BTW). I read in another post some suggestions of car hire firms in Crete which I think we will take up, but its also nice to go on some organised trips - I believe one such case would be to the Samaria Gorge where they drop you at the top, you walk through and the pick you up on the other side.

All I know is that organising these through the holiday rep is usually the most costly approach.

Any suggestion of places to go, websites or companies to use would be gratefully received.

Chris

Samaria Gorge is long hike (Full day ) over some rough going , partly in the riverbed and water so a change of heavy footwear is essential .

The trips to the Gorge frequently get there late morning meaning you have to rush the hike down the gorge ( not recommended ) .

A better option is to make your way to Paleochora the day before and get a room overnight ( around £15 for a family room only ).
A local bus then departs at around 6.30 am to the head of the gorge where you pay a fee for entrance . boats then pick you up on arrival at the beach end and transfer back to Paleochora .

Thanks, nice idea. Walking is not a problem and we have been warned about take good boots. We spent days walking around Halkidiki last year.
