Hiya, XP really isn't supported any more (it's about 16 years old), so I'd be surprised if you haven't managed to pick up one or other bit of malware along the way. Any fiddling with the browser is still on a very unstable base (like worrying about bathroom sealant in a house where the roof is falling in and foundations crumbling). If there is any way you can start afresh, maybe windows 10 or at least use this as a chance to look at buying a new computer which had more modern security support, it'll save you a lot of heartache.

You know the way cars are great when new, and you get used to them and don't realise they're losing power as the engine wears, they rattle and clunk more, they start costing more to get through the MOT but to you, they're your new car you've had from scratch? Your computer is like that - been a faithful servant but there comes a time to admit it's time for a fresh start...

    Quote from Google Chrome: -
"We recognize that hundreds of millions of users, including a good chunk of current Chrome users, still rely on XP. Moreover, many organizations still run dozens or even hundreds of applications on XP and may have trouble migrating. Our goal is to support Chrome for XP users during this transition process. Most importantly, Chrome on XP will still be automatically updated with the latest security fixes to protect against malware and phishing attacks."

stephenliverpool1 - maybe it's not Chrome, maybe it's some of your extensions - I'm thinking of Adobe Flash. You can set Chrome to NOT open extensions automatically (so you get a grey box and you have to click into it if you want to see the content). It's often adverts that don't matter anyway.
Or you could take it a stage further and install an ad-blocker extension. You'll be surprised at what a resource hog those ads can be.
And hopefully you're saving for a new computer or OS...
  • Hi all,

I have worked it out thanks. Made a few changes to Chrome and hey presto, it is working fine now.

BTW, I have got Avast so I am protected.

Of-course you are. Just avoid banking sites, any shopping sites which are password protected and make sure there's no personal data (about you, friends, family) stored on your computer and you'll be fine.

    In short, no.

Vulnerabilities that get discovered for Windows 7 & 8 that are patched by Microsoft very quickly get reverse engineered into exploit code and as Microsoft have a habit of recycling crufty old code there's a chance that may still affect XP. This may leave you open to drive by downloads and remote code execution as this will not be fixed thus leaving you at greater risk than using a currently supported OS. The list grows every day.

I would suggest either upgrade Windows or install Linux.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

As others have posted...No you're not!

If you want to continue using XP until such time as it doesn't work anymore try installing Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit and running all browsing activity in a sandboxed environment such as Sandboxie.

It won't then matter what cr*p gets past your a/v - as soon as you close your browser it's gone.

And for a "belt and bracers" approach you could also lock down your computer with something like Voodooshield (free) or AppGuard (paid for) so that nothing can run without your permission.

Why don't you move off XP to one of the free systems like http://www.ubuntu.com/ then you won't have these problems.
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring
