Credit report says settled but Three still asking for cash

I cancelled my Three contract when it expired earlier this year. I made a final payment and then cancelled my direct debit with them.

Since then they've sent letters asking for 23.10 and they cannot explain to me what the charge is for and I no longer have access to my bills as they converted my account to PAYG.

My credit file shows them as settled but they've now passed on this letter to a debt collection agency.

How much damage can they do considering the account is 'settled' according to Experian?

  • Experian may show as settled, but what about the other two agencies (Call Credit and Equifax). Three report to at Call Credit as my account shows up on Noddle.

Did you give them the required 30 days notice that you wished to end the service at the end of the contract minimum term?

They could do quite a lot of damage to your credit files.

Three could change the entry on file from settled to outstanding / defaulted.

Or the debt collector may add on a new entry to your credit file for the outstanding amount showing the account as defaulted.

Have you written to them asking them for an explanation of the outstanding balance they claim is owed?

Yes, they certainly could. It seems you have done nothing wrong, so if anything adverse happens please make sure you hit them with compo claims.
  • I emailed them and they called me today. It's a pain because I'm abroad and all their contact numbers are premium rate.

Anyway they explained the charge on the account as being from the 4th-26th May of the last month (I cancelled on 26th April).

Last DD they took was on the 22nd April.

I no longer have access to my bills because they converted my account to PAYG and I was on paperless billing.

I've probably misunderstood this but it's good to know that settled on your credit file doesn't mean as much.
