student living expenses

  • We are also 'over the limit' as regards household income and so our daughter has been awarded the minimum

£3070 tuition fees paid (straight to the university) and
    £3385 maintenance loan.

Both of these are repayable through her student loan. The maintenance loan just covers her accommodation costs (in halls as this is her first year), so we are having to finance her living costs (food, toiletries, clothes, going out etc.) I had intended to give her £200 month. She doesn't drink alcohol so probably won't blow the lot in the student bar! I would think £70 a week to be ample if it is only covering living costs and not rent or utilities.

  • Daughter now settling in to uni life very well. Over the past week I have discovered that there are quite a few prospective student (& their parents)who are totally unaware that there is such a thing as the 'basic maintainance loan' Some people are not even bothering to fill in the relevant sections on the request forms as they think that they don't stand a chance of getting it. Is'nt it about time that this information was made clearer, or is it just me!!
Also Just a word to the wise for any student who has yet to start uni (& to all the banks of 'Mum and Dad)..........Freshers weeks are EXPENSIVE!!!! The S.U. bars seem to be open all day and most of the night, kids are loving it and no doubt having a great time, at a price! Free student buses in to and out of towns etc stop early evening and taxis don't come cheap.. Joining clubs and societies can cost too, some sporting groups will also need you to join the gym/pool etc...all extra at some places. I'll stop there as I'm at great risk of sounding like my mother!!

My son must be feeling really hard done by. His maintenence loan will cover his accomodation and thats all.

I cannot afford to support him :( unfortunately.

His Dad my ex won't (says it all really) unless he gets desperate.

He will have to work to survive and I don't think he will be the only one.

You're right! He's definitely not the only one, my son is in this position too:o as are several of his friends. If they really want to do it they find a way! Lots of courses seem to leave a fair amount of free time, so working part-time is do-able, and teaches them the value of money (Well, that's what I tell myself, and him, anyway!:p )
