Could bankruptcy affect my girlfriend?

Hi all

I am currently around 15k in debt.

I have been sat on it for around 2 years and done nothing about it.

However, I am with an amazing girlfriend, who is training to become a teacher and she is inspiring me to get my situation sorted out.

I am currently requesting my credit files and potentially I will be applying for a debt relief order / bankruptcy.

However, my girlfriend is doing a lot better than I am financially, and she wants to buy a flat for us to live in together.

This would make me extremely happy. However, I am too paranoid to move in with her incase my debt would ever affect her in any way shape or form.

At the moment, I get 100 letters a day to my moms house, threatening that baliff's are going to come round etc. this has been the case for 2 years, I presume they never follow through with the threat as they know I have £0.00 recurring

However, if I move in with my girlfriend and notify the council etc. , I presume all the threat's from my creditor's would then be delivered to her address - could the baliff's potentially ever turn up to her flat and threaten her + her stuff, based on me being in debt and me living with her?

What about if I enter a DEBT RELIEF ORDER or apply for bankruptcy? Could this in any way affect her or her flat?

I know I am probably being paranoid, but honestly I just could not live with myself if it did

If your in rented accomodation and go bankrupt\dro there will be no bailiffs, although before your bankrupt or DRO is setup it's an option to your creditors.

In any case bailiffs can't legally take another persons goods to pay a debt.It would be a good idea in the case of anything valuable to think how she could prove it was hers.

Do you have any accounts in both you and your girlfriends name, if not her credit file should be unaffected

If you and your girlfriend live together you'll need to ensure bills are fairly split, and she may be asked to disclose her earnings to verify that
