Hudl2 - how did this happen?

A nice, but kind of creepy thing, has happened to me, and I dont understand it.. perhaps other people do?

Back in April I bought a refurbished Hudl2. It was a lilac one and arrived in the box with a thin film over the screen. It worked fine for a few weeks, then failed to move beyond the power up screen, and I could not do anything with it. I had to send it back to the technical team, without having been able to retrieve any of my screen saver photo, other personal photos, data or my apps, as it was impossible even to do a hard reset.

A week later I received another lilac Hudl in a plastic bag. It was impossible to tell if it was my original one as this one had been restored to factory state, with just the original screen saver of camper van and Tesco apps etc.

A few weeks later it developed another fault and so back it went. On its return the fault had not been fixed, so I called customer services and vented. The guy said he would send a courier to collect it and refund me. He advised he could not replace it as such, as refurbs are no longer available and suggested that if I wanted another one I should just order a brand new one from the Tesco Direct website and then collect it from store. So I ordered it, this time selecting a red one, and I did that before the courier came to collect the lilac one. (Hudl number 2)

Fast forward a few days and I collect my shiny new red Hudl, charge it up, remove the hard plastic cover, and switch on, only to be totally amazed to see my original screensaver photo from Hudl number 1, and the "legitimate apps" that I had downloaded for that Hudl, such as MX player, Es filer etc, already in place. There were no other photos on there or emails etc, but even so I cannot understand how they got there, and moreover, if Tesco have the ability to do that why they did not restore them to Hudl number 2?

Someone has suggested to me, that I have just got my original Hudl back with a new red backing, but that can't be so surely?

Did you log back in to your google account on the latest hudl?

Sounds like it has sync'd some apps etc when you have logged into it.

I agree with OP above me.

When you've set up your new Hudl 2 you've signed into Google and it's downloaded the settings and apps you'd installed on your original, faulty device.

    From Google Support:

You can use Android Backup Service to restore your data on a new device and restore app settings after you've backed up your data to your Google account.
Restore your data and settings using Android Backup Service

When you add your Google account to a device, the data that you previously backed up for that Google account is restored to the device.

Learn what data and settings are restored
    Google Calendar settings
    Wi-Fi networks & passwords
    Home screen wallpapers
    Gmail settings
Apps installed via Google Play (backed up on the Play Store app)
    Display settings (brightness & sleep)
    Language & input settings
    Date & time
Third-party app settings & data (varies by app)

You weren't asked to perform the initial set up as if it was a brand new device?

So you didn't enter your Google account and password details before you saw these things? (That's the next setup step after connecting to the Internet).
