Pls read my original post carefully. I put the holster back and the motor stopped. I put the cap back on my 'filler'. At this stage original price is showing. I have stopped fuelling or taking any petrol.
But when I get inside to pay an extra penny has been added. I doubt that it is the cashier is doing this; it is more likely the fault of the pump.
But from a consumer point of view, the sale has ended when you put the holster back as you can no longer take any more fuel. So why do you get charged 1p after this?

Did you not read the post above? Or are they in the same language as printer boxes?

Ive noticed exactly the same thing at our local Sainsburys. It will read exactly £20 when I replace the pump and walk away but it sure as hell will say £20.01 when I get to the till.

Happened over and over again the first few times you think you have got it wrong so you start to double check.
I know its only a penny but if you picked a packet of biscuits or something of a shop counter priced at £1 you wouldn't hand over £1.01p. Ive stopped going there now, I know there are bigger problems in the world but it just annoys me.

I work for Sainsbury's in a petrol station, and no, we have no way of pressing a button on the till to add that extra 1p.

We're a store that opened last year and have a new style pump, which has a pre-select option which stops the penny issue all together. The way it works, you can fill up as normal or before you lift the nozzle you select how much fuel in £££ you want and it will stop on the amount.

Just curious, but do you know if there is any sort of fractional rounding which happens on the pumps?

ie if you fill up by 0.4p (about 3ml) then does it round down to 0p or up to 1p? Or, for example, 0.6p rounding up to 1p?

Once you replace the holster, you cannot draw any more fuel nor can anymore fuel come out as the hose/holster is upside down. Also, I dont think it is the cashiers adding a penny.
I suspect what is happening is that their pumps are faulty and are adding a penny due to the movement of the internal components.
The man thing is that the customer is not drawing any more fuel but is being charged a penny.
