Messenger without Facebook route please

I'm not untirely sure this post should be here, but as it requires a bit of technical no-how, thought I would try it,
When our daughter was posted overseas, I was lead to believe that facebook messenger would be excellent for realtime communication, it was and still is. Because I had reluctantly dragged myself into the world of FB, I produced my own page which is never or hardly used. I feel it should go, especially as in the last month or so, I understand that Messenger is now independent of FB.
I followed through and noted the difference between delete account and deactivate and proceeded with the former. It was then that I was aware Messenger was going to, so cancelled the delete and my account is still there.
So, does anyone know how or if it is possible to have one without the other and the abc route to achieving it please.
I wish to have messenger on my windows laptop, android phone and iOS ipad.
PS, it seems fb without mess, is only available in limited countries, so have deactivated FB

I use messenger with my mum - only one who uses it with me, but can't see how it is independent of FB, as my mum's picture on messenger seems to change whenever her FB picture changes? Not an expert though. Most oversees communication I do is via Skype, which can be message, phone call, or video call.0

Messenger needs a FB account.
Is there a reason why you need to close / deactivate your FB account?
Just make sure everything is set to private and don't use it anymore, messenger will still work fine.“Time is intended to be spent, not saved” - Alfred Wainwright0 -
You need to be in United States, Canada, Peru, or Venezuela to use Messenger with just a phone number rather than a FB account. I expect they will roll it out in the UK at some point too. If you really want rid of Facebook now, check out Skype and WhatsApp as alternatives.0

Yes, I have since discovered that thanks. Only a few countries are able to remove themselves from FB and keep Messenger. Of course there is google Hangouts, Viber and Yahoo now I think. But where my daughter is, only messenger is allowed. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Plenty of alternatives to Facebook Messenger that don't need Facebook.
Skype, Hangouts, Whatsapp, Viber, Slack, I could go on.0 -

We do skype, but will look into the messaging side of of it.
Whatsapp, has to be done through phone ie iphone.
Viber isn't an option in her current location.
Slack, never heard of it, so will explore.
