Hi and welcome chickadee
I bought my sewing machine years ago and the most I use it for is sewing my sons navy cadet badges on his uniform, at the start of each year I always declare to my hubby that this will be the year I take the time to teach myself how to sew I will,,, one day lol
Does anyone else buy in bulk to save money with their shopping? I use to, I really need to get back into the swing of it. Its just finding somewhere to store it
I got a message this morning that our thread has been put in this weeks money tips email :T:T
Well a little shopping this morning, DS2 is going to a party on the weekend so I need to get a gift and my poor pooch really needs a new bed, they're super cheap at Kmart so I think we'll go there.
Then its housework (yay!) and dinner to be cooked and then off to work tonight for me
Hope everyone has a lovelydayLove people use things. The opposite never works.0 -
Hi all,
Welcome to all the new people on the thread, great to see so many joining in. I remember when I started the old thread about getting back to OS, here it feels just like when I started the old one, this need to rekindle our acquaintance with frugal ways. It strikes a chord with so many of us.
i think that the main reason for this is because it is so utterly easy to go with the majority flow, after our frugal efforts of a lifetime, sometimes, to relax into the relentless pull of the consumer society, to let go of having to explain oneself to friends and acquaintances who do not understand, or even scorn, the simple uncluttered lifestyle of the true OSer.
So, sometimes we slip and end up rejoining the homogeneous mass of the inane spenders, only to wake up after a while and feel the call of our true home, the cluster of people who, like us, deeply despise the commercialism that surround us and threatens to engulf us, in the consumer society.
And here in this lovely forum we find our true kin, the women, mostly, but also men, who take pride in their Make do and Mend ways, who varnish old furniture, rescue dying plants, make bread pudding with the crusts, unpick and re-knit old jumpers, sew side-to-middle bedsheets, prep, store, reduce, reuse...exactly my kind of people, and it feels good to be here with you all! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Good morning. I will go shopping today, the fridge is bare and I need some cat food. I hope I have my mojo with me. Poorly kitty cat is getting better, but still needs some pampering.
Amanda, have you got an old fashioned suitcase? My dog bed is a suitcase I have had for 40 years, opened out, and a couple of cushions in it. You could make cushions out of old bed sheets using your machine. Or you could put a couple of pillows in it. This makes a double bed. If you have one dog, take the suitcase apart and use half of it.
I am making a bag at the moment, using oddments of fabric. Looking very colourful. Will dig some potatoes up in the garden later, must remember not to buy any. Managed to walk past the village shop yesterday and not go in. :rotfl:

Morning!
Had an awful bug the last few days but feeling better now thankfully. I have. Both kids and desperately need to do a shop, we need nappies so will have to go to a$da but it's so much cheaper to go to a!di & ¡Celand which are close together but I can't drag them round all 3 shops as its a nightmare. Will try to just get essential bits xxLiving the simple life0 -
Good afternoon.
The freezer is now empty and has fully dried out. It's in the garage so I just left the freezer door open for a couple of days to air dry. I'm going to make a list of what I need to buy and make. I tend to make things like homemade turkey burgers and fishcakes for nice easy teas during term time. I'll set aside a couple of days to do this.
Someone asked about bulk buying, I buy things on offer that I use a lot of. I have quite a lot of washing powder in at the moment as it was recently on offer. I buy a brand of toothpaste for sensitive teeth and only buy it when on offer. I do find that buying like this saves me money.

Good luck with the shopping. My four are nearly all grown up now but I remember the shopping trips.

Thanks Pollys - it wasn't so bad although I stuck to my list it was much more expensive than it would have been if I shopped between the 3. I did manage to make a huge pan of spaghetti Bolognese which I have portioned up and froze for another day. I need to get the freezer stocked for some after school teas - I'm liking the sound of Turkey burgers! I have tomato pasta sauce frozen & a curry sauce in there too which is cheap and quick to make. My two love pasta and I can add meat if we have any left over or do a pasta bake with some cheap garlic bread.Living the simple life0

Just wandering in...saw this thread and thought 'that's me'. I've become idle over the past couple of years and have lost the plot when it comes to menu planning, cooking from scratch and generally being careful about what we spend.
But, I worked out our cash flow and budget the other week (then did nothing with it for a couple of days, but that's another story!), and I've now got a better idea of where savings can be made.
I haven't properly cooked from scratch for a long, long time. I've got two children who have become picky eaters, a husband who is lactose intolerant, and then there's me - I'm trying to lose some weight. Makes for interesting mealtimes and it has seemed much easier to grab something from the freezer. That needs to change.
The laziness has extended into much of the rest of my life, so I'm going to head into the FlyLady thread and make a start there too.0 -
Snap Ishtar! It's not as hard getting back into it as I thought it would be - I'm just easing myself in & trying to do one thing a day for now. Today it was batch cooking the spaghetti Bolognese. One day at a timeLiving the simple life0

Its really hard when you have to cater for special dietary requirements, my hubby and 2 of my sons is also lactose intolerant and hubby is also gluten intolerant. It can make for an expensive shopping trip
Ilona No I don't have any old suitcases but great idea though I'll keep my eye open for anyone throwing one out
Glad your feeling better Tink
