Default on my Credit report 2013 Natwest CC

I just checked my credit report and I have 2 defaults from an old Natwest credit card.

I paid the CC balance off in full in February 2013 and asked to close the account as I was moving abroad.

Then in May 2013 when I returned home I had several letters from Natwest saying I was in arrears and had missed 2 payments and I owed £52 inclusive of interest on the fees. I was outraged at this as they had charged me £12 for a missed fee in March, April & May and compiled the interest.

So for the sake of 12p and them not calling my house phone. I had to pay a total of £52 to 'close' the account for a second time.

I'm going to write them a letter. Can anyone provide a template?

What do you think the chances of:
1) Natwest removing the defaults from my file are?
2) Refunding me the money fully or partially?

Cheers.

  • It sounds like you forgot to pay trailing interest after you cleared the balance.

If they did agree to close the account and you can prove this, they don't have a leg to stand on.
Normally a closure is confirmed by a letter.

they couldn't tell anyone except you, so what's the point of calling your home phone. Also didn't you get post
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

That was more than two years ago, why did't you take the issue up back then? You probably do not have "two defaults" but two late payments on your credit file.

If you want to achieve anything, do not write a "how dare you" letter, but a very polite "sorry, all my fault" letter.

I expressed my wish to close the account on the phone. Obviously I can't prove that now. It's not looking good. :(

Yeah I know. Back then I was in a mess so I neglected it and only stumbled upon it again today when I checked my credit report.

I'll take your advice about the letter though. For the sake of 12p I had to pay £52, I think that's unreasonable in every sense of the word. I've been with Natwest for over 10 years, perhaps they will sympathise with me, perhaps not.

I was abroad and my parents didn't open the letters. Probably my fault but I think the charges were very unreasonable for the sake of 12p and i did explicitly say 'close the account' when I paid it off in full on the phone.

I think Bengal-stripe gives very good advice. If you go to them politely and contritely, saying it was an oversight on your part they'll probably sort if for you. Go in all guns blazing and it'll be much more difficult.
