Ni contributions and JSA

Hi guys, tried to find the answer to this here but couldnt, so, hopefully someone may help.

being made redundant soon, but want to use the granted 12 week PILON period to spend time with my sick wife and take a hard earned holiday etc. After that I will be prepared to begin looking for work. However, in order to keep my NI contribs up I've been told that I should sign on immediately. So, is it poss to sign on JUST to get the contribs paid, without having to then become a jobseeker, or, are the two totally linked together? If so, bearing in mind that I've paid my NI contribs solidly for the last 16 years of this pesky job, then I believe that missing the next 3 months won't really be the end of the world!?!?

If you sign on you'll be expected to do the whole job seeking thing. Best to take your break first.

if you are getting redundancy pay then you maybe able to afford to pay for your own national insurance for a bit then you wont have to sign on

If you want to claim JSA then you will have to be available for work, even if its contribution based JSA

  • thanks. Just a thought though, a comment on another part of the board states this ....

You cannot claim jobseekers allowance until the day after what would have been the end of your notice period, but if you let the Dept of Works and Pensions know they can arrange for your NI stamps to continue if you give them a ring on 0845 602 6710.

My understanding was that one could claim contributions based JSA regardless of any pilon period?

The above quote is correct as the firm should pay your NIC until that date too and also put that date on your P45.

ie HMRC would have you listed as employed until the end of the 12 week period, so you couldn't also get NI credits as a Jobseeker.

I know however that some firms' HR Depts will put whatever date the person wants on a P45 and reference, especially where there's been a compromise agreement or they want to start a new job asap.
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.

Check your redundancy paperwork to understand if Tax/NI has been included in your payout. This link contains helpful info...Termination Payments...

You could also post your question on Redundancy and Redundancy Planning board...

Can anyone give the official guidance on this?

Do you have to wait until your notice period ends before you claim JSA if you have been awarded PILON?

Don't call the expensive 0845 number.

All DWP lines have been changed to cheaper 0345 numbers.
