Repair not done correctly

I had a plumber out to fix my toilet which broke suddenly and the cistern was continually filling up. I paid £55 for it to be fixed, the plumber changed a part in the cistern. Unfortunately the toilet now has a leak into the bowl which means the cistern makes a noise every half hour or while it fills to the correct level again. The plumber now wants to change the siphon at the cost of £55. In my mind I have already paid him to do a job which he has not done correctly and he has now caused a problem that I did not have before. I cannot believe 2 parts broke at exactly the same time. Do I have any rights or do I just need to suck it up and pay again.

i agree the job should have been fixed the first time, the plumber should have replaced the job lot for £55, you are getting ripped off in my eyes, the syphon shown is the cheapest from the wickes website.

Very difficult to litigate with a repairrepair

Hence a lot of websites selling by reputation which you need to check out

Just tell the world about this rip off merchantmerchantor I'm sure if you can Google any amount of similar complaint against them

Use a plumber with a reputation to maintain next time

I had similar issue with our toilet at work and food the receptionist not to pay him until I had chance to check his work which was nothing more than a five minute bodge which would have lasted couple weeks. I told him to replace this whole cystern before we would pay and he came in next day and did it properly. I think we paid him £75

Don't suck it up yourself - cistern water won't taste good.

Sounds like two separate problems so not necessarily the plumbers fault.


The first fault would have been a faulty filler which was causing the cistern to fill up. This is a separate part from the syphon. After replacing the filler there would have been no reason to believe the syphon was also faulty.


Coincidence at your expense and it's a bigger job to replace the syphon and a bit of a bu***r if the wing nuts are rusted in place. So regardless there was always going to be the extra expense of the second part and the longer time needed to replace it.
