I am new to virgin media and would like to know which are the best override companies for calling abroad, mainly New Zealand, Australia and France:cool:

Welcome to the MSE forums ladyoftheislands.

Although the MSE International Callchecker lists providers available from a BT landline, most of the gateway (dial-through) numbers should work from a VM line.

However, Virgin Media have started blocking access to some so you may have to adopt a 'try one, try another' approach before you find one which works.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I'd also add that although the MSE Callchecker shows the prices based on BT's pricelist, other phone carriers are free to set their own tariff/charging basis, so while say an 0844.nnn.nnnn number may be shown as say 0.5p/minute on BT, it may well be more expensive on Virgin or TalkTalk, Tiscali etc etc, which may themselves have their own rules about minimum call charges and set-up costs, and the only way to be sure is to check their detailed pricelist.

That's one beauty of having a BT line albeit with a carrier preference on it (ie rather than renting the LINE from another provider) - you can still dial 1280 to force that single call over BT at BT rates, and with the benefit of that call counting towards your BT Privacy CLID freebie call requirement.

I remember when the Dixons Group launched their ill-fated VoIP service (was it Freetalk?) and their initial pricelist had about 10 rates, within a month it was more like 10 pages of small type!

You can use http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php from Virgin Media ,their is an 0808 freephone access number which is free to call from VM whatever phone package your on. Rates are competitive. Theirs a small connection fee,but unlike some other suppliers you dont pay if your not connected.
