Car Insurance Query

Can someone point out what I can do here?. I held motor insurance, with my daughter as named driver while she was learning to drive. When she passed her test, I gave her the car (it was old and not worth very much). I maintained the current insurance on that car.

I then bought a new car for myself. I insured this car and was asked to provide proof of my no-claims discount. I sent off a copy of my insurance certificate from my old car. My new insurance company have stated that this is not valid proof of entitlement as it shows that my no-claims discount is being used. I didn’t realise that I could only have my no-claims discount applied to only one policy (yes I know that was stupid, and it makes sense now that I think about it!)

In a few months, my daughter will be getting another car and insuring it herself. I intend to advise my new insurance company that I no longer have a no-claims discount to use against this policy. Will they simply increase the amount of my premium and will they then give me my discount back after my daughter takes out her own policy and I cancel the other one that I am using my discount against

Thanks in advance for help

If you are down as the main driver and she is in fact the main driver then this is illegal as you are not representing the risks honestly to the insurer. I can tell from your post that this isn't intentional but nevertheless it's illegal and therefore you should amend the situation ASAP as they could refuse to pay out on a claim.

Get the policy on her car put into her name and then use your no claims on your own policy.
You get the benefit of the no claims and then everything is legal and above board.

The car has a large engine and would be costly for my daughter to insure that's why I want to use my discount against this policy until she can buy her own smaller car.

So back to my original question, can I suspend the discount on my own new policy and get it back later.

I apreciate the point about the main driver too, thanks!

So you are being dishonest about who the driver is to get a discount?

You would need to ask each insurer individually but I suspect not.
Policies generally work on a 12 month basis.
If you want to do this you would need to cancel but most charge cancellation fees these days so you need to work out whether it's worth cancelling.

i.e. does cancellation fee and loss of no claims make the discount worthwhile?

Not quite. i was honest at the time of taking the policy out and now that you have pointed it out I will advise that I am no longer the main driver
