Mortgage Payment Protection/ASU with pre-existing chronic condition

Dear All,

I want to go self-employed and want to cover myself for ASU but have a disability which may but a spanner in the works.

Since I have not had an accident relating to the condition for two years it is not classed as a pre-existing condition but since it is something I was born with, and is untreatable, it gets counted as a chronic condition.

Does anyone know of an insurer out there who'll insure someone with a chronic condition for ASU?

    If you are self employed then PHI is probably a better bet than ASU.

    Plus, PHI is underwritten with your medical history known unlike ASU which isnt.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

    I assume PHI stands for Private Health Insurance, however it's actually my mortgage payments and other commitments I wish to cover rather than hospital bills specifically. Is that what you meant?

    PHI = Permanent Health Insurance.

    ASU will only provide payments for 2 years in the event of a claim situation. It is generally taken by employed persons.

    Self-employed persons generally take out PHI as it will provide a monthly payment until retirement, not just 2 years.

    As Dunstonh mentioned, PHI is fully underwritten with your current circumstances taken into account. ASU tends to have many conditions attached to it.
