Hi,

I have a hair line fracture on my 5th metatarsal bone in my left foot and have been wearing an aircast boot since 4th July and so haven't driven.

My foot is feeling better and there is no pain but does anyone know if I can drive a manual car while I am wearing an aircast boot?

The hospital were very vague and just said, 'I would know when I could drive.'

Anyone else have experience of this?

I think there are three issues - does the boot restrict your ability to fully control your car, does it hurt, and does it affect your insurance?

For the first, try sitting in the car while it is parked and seeing whether you have the full range of movement, or whether the boot catches on the other pedals, when you try to use it?
For the second, consider whether any of the movements cause you any pain
For the Third, you would need to ask your insurance company.

The highway code refers to ensuring that "clothing and footwear do not prevent you from using the controls in the correct manner"

    Thank you for your reply.

No I'm not in any pain and I can use the clutch without any problem.

I think I may ring my insurance company.

Your insurers will refer you to the DVLA, they arent medical experts. The DVLA say https://www.gov.uk/broken-limbs-driving that you dont need to tell them and so it simply comes down to if (a) your Dr says you are fit to drive AND (b) you feel fit to drive. That isnt to say a policeman couldnt challenge your judgement on such things.

Especially if you end up being involved in a reportable accident.
