    I think of G_M in one of the Brass Eye "Cake" clips... poor old buffer, he really doesn't understand we all laugh out loud at everything he posts, and not in a "friendly manner". Nobody tell him; he'll spill his tea, and Nurse will have to towel him down again. ;)

    To answer your question, no, I do not consider it normal to be asked by the solicitor to speak directly to the other party. I have never been asked to do this.

    It is usual for your solicitor to ask you for some preferred dates, then they pass the info up and down the chain to come up with the date which suits everyone. The EA sometimes gets an idea of some likely dates earlier on in the process, but once the solicitors are ready they sort it between them, with everyone's permission.

    It's not the norm but I can see the advantages - providing others in the chain aren't infuriating burks in which case it's probably best never to meet them in person as you'll agree on nothing.


    We're in direct contact with our vendor as they used an online agency for listing only - it's worked well and they're nice people without any great demands so we're more inclined to meet their needs for completion dates than anyone else in the chain. In a 5 house chain it might be good to have an ally!

    I work as a legal sec and we regularly ask clients to discuss dates through the estate agent. They can contact everyone in the chain and get discussions about dates happening.

    We can only talk to our clients and the related solicitor in the chain so if there's a large chain discussing dates can get complicated. It can create a great deal of extra work/correspondance which would have been avoided if clients spoke to each other/through the agents
    Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck :)

    When selling, about a month ago, I sat in the garden drinking beer(s) with my buyer, discussing all such important matters. We agreed completely on everything about anything after a few were opened. One fly in the ointment was, unknown to us, the dam' wimmin had been at the G&T in the kitchen, also agreeing on everything. Result was no sober driver, so they had to leave their car & walk back into town.... That was a quick sale... easy... profitable... successful...

    We have been chatting with our vendor in the last week, and came away with home-made sausages (delicious). We shall take beer and wine next time we go. One of us will stay sober... probably... as it's rather further for us to walk. I'm hopeful of a good purchase experience.

    Be nice to people. Why do neighbours not talk these days? (When I left the last house, in saying "bye", I realised quite how few of my then-neighbours knew each other's names...). Why don't housebuyers chat? I tell you, for selling a house, it works. I'm still on social terms (occasional email, card at Christmas) with most of the buyers I have sold to, and that's quite a few by now. Same with tenants of mine. I'm nice to them.

    And little old ladies living nearby.... I chat to our postie, the bin men.... Am I alone in this? Weird?

    I think I must still live in the 1950's.

    Oh, and G_M; ask nurse to put some whisky in your tea next time.... delicious! I SAID DELICIOUS!
