Help needed please. Strange Default on Credit Account....

Hi Guys & Girls,

First time posting on this site so please be gentle....

I am 32 and regularly check my credit file, 2/3 times a year. i have a very good credit score as i have been building up to getting a mortgage with my wife.

Last week i checked my credit file with checkmyfile and noticed on my call credit file i have a Default that has suddenly shown on this account which has dramatically affected my score . The details of the Account are as follows.....

1. account opened - November 2009
2. account default date - July 2010

Now i have checked my file constantly for at least the last 8 years due to one of my friends being the victim of fraud which raised my awareness to the subject and this is the first time this has shown on my account in all that time. Also this account was opened up in an address i have not stayed at in over 13 years which actually happens to be my mums address......

This default was placed there by Cabot so i contacted them via email as i am currently working over seas at present. I gave them all the details that was on my credit file in regards to this default such as....

Name
DOB
Address it was opened in
Date account opened
Last 4 digits of account number on the default
Opening balance
Closing balance (which is the same amount of opening balance)
Default date

I received the following reply....

Dear Mr MacKay,

Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately we are unable to locate an account with the details you have supplied.

Please call us on 0800 328 0708 in order for us to assist you further.

Yours sincerely

Cabot

I know 100% that this is not an account i have opened and find it funny that they can't find any record of this account even though they placed it there considering the amount of details i have issued them.

My wife and i are actively looking for a house as i type this and are afraid that this will be a problem unless it is sorted. i have emailed back explaining that i work offshore and that i can only contact them by email and explaining that i am currently looking to get a mortgage and need this account to be looked into to clarify that it has been a mistake but have not yet received a reply..... that was 7 days ago.

Does anyone have any advice or knowledge of what steps to take next as this is all new to me. Can this be removed from my credit account if it has been wrongly put there? and if so... how long does that take?

I have spoken to my mother about it and she hasn't had any letters for me at her address since i moved out in 2002 apart from junk mail which she always keeps and gives it to me should there be any.

i look forward to your advice.

thanks in advance

Scott

    Hi

As an obvious first question - presumably you did actually check your callcredit file directly yourself? not just gone on the checkmyfile info?

Is the name on the account entry on your checkmyfile exactly the same as your own name? and the correct dob?

Its worth also registering a dispute with callcredit over the entry.

  • Hi Tixy,

no i haven't checked my file with callcredit directly. i just assumed that it would be the same? am i mistaken?

yes all the details are the same as mine, both spelling and the correct dob.

how would i go about registering a dispute, like i said i'm very new to all this so it all a bit daunting.

    thanks for the quick reply

It should be the same on callcredit, but I would still get a copy of your file from them to double check all the info for the entry.
Once you have a copy of your callcredit file it will detail how to register a dispute with the credit reference agency. They should then double check the entry and should contact the organisation reporting it to query it on your behalf.

Cabot always deny being able to find the account if you email, since they want you to phone so they can try to bully you into paying without a written or email record.
