Is £10 per sq/m all inclusive unreasonable for a carpet?

We are looking to get 2 or 3 new carpets for our house. About 40 sq/m in total.

I had been hoping to pay around £10 sq/m for carpet, fitting and underlay and get doors sanded/amended if needed for new higher carpet.

I got some samples sent from one of the "national" chains that were <£10, oh they were awful. One of them was like the texture of those rice cakes! Then the extortionate underlay was required for free fitting, that was about £7!

So switching to independent retailers/warehouses now.

Am I being unreasonable to expect to get sub £10 sq/m?

Not looking for anything to fancy, just a nice pile and perhaps stain resistant, but not essential.

You get what you pay for.

For areas of high traffic such as a hallway I'd be looking at a minimum of £15 sq mtr with the best underlay I could afford. Likewise for a living room where you spend a lot of time.

Areas such as bedrooms can accommodate cheaper carpets as they (usually!!) get far less traffic.

Don't be drawn in by these multinationals that offer free underlay on all carpets over £x. The underlay they provide is the cheapest of the cheap and won't last long. A good underlay is a sound investment.

A cheap carpet on good underlay will always be better than expensive carpet on cheap underlay.

Under £10/sqm you'd be looking at polypropylene loop pile with a rubber not hessian backing, sort of stuff LLs use in student flats

I think you will find the answer for this yourself. Try this-

£400 for the job inc VAT is 340 ex VAT.

Assume 3 hours to do it (incl travelling time) and 2 blokes at minimum £10 per hour and you have 6 hours so £60. Allow a small delivery charge of £20 and 25% margin for the supplier and you are down to around £200 for the product and this must include carpet, underlay, gripper bars and probably thresholds and you will be lucky to get rubbish if anything. And all those costs are squeezed to a minimum.

Sorry if its not what you wanted to hear but sometimes it helps to break it down to realise what things should actually cost.

I usually pay around £8 per sq/m just for the carpet, and that is not for anything fancy. If you want to shave some off the total price, source the underlay and gripper yourself and get an independent fitter.

You might get something that would be ok for a rental property but don't expect it to last long.
Ive been doing my house out a room at a time and do all the work myself apart from the carpets. The rooms are all approximately 12m square and ive been paying around £300 per room. However, they are all good quality carpets with top underlay and well fitted and will last a long time, even with the kids and dogs yomping over them continuously!!
As said, you get what you pay for with carpets so don't expect too much on your budget.

Thats what I have been working to as well for our 12m squared bedrooms.

Carpet right were quoting £350, a local guy can do it for £300 with same carpet and better underlay.
