Is this legit???

My latest bank statement showed that I paid £1 to a company called Web-secure.co.uk. Never heard of them, and on visiting their website, I was invited to unsubscribe by entering an email address, but none of my emails were recognised, and the so-called help line didn't work either. Sent a message, but no reply.
Phoned Bank helpline, and blocked future payments, I hope. After all, what's to stop someone taking a lot more.
Just wondered if anyone else had come accross this. Can't see how it can be legit, website is a bit wierd as well. Not sure if this is the best part of the forum, but it does involve a bank account, so....

There is no website called Web-secure.co.uk
Have you mis-typed the name?0 -
Right, a bit more info. Seems it is one of those scams where you are charged an initial £1, for dubious "services," then if you don't respond quickly, a subscription is set up for a monthly magazine, for, in this case, £27. The worrying part is the apparent ease of access to your bank account. Nasty. I bet none of them have ever gone to gaol, after all, there is as such no crime, I suppose.
Be warned.....0 -
A thousand pardons, its Web-assure.co.uk I must remain calm....0

I do not know what the transaction on my bank statement corresponds to ?
If the name Web-Assure appears on your bank statement, it is because we have debited you on behalf of a commercial web site.
Our customer support service will be able to answer all your questions regarding this transaction.0 -
How did they get your details to get the £1.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
"Warning : Never oppose a Web-Assure.co.uk payment before contacting our customer service, as this could lead to legal action. We have a privileged relationship with our partner sites and will intervene free of charge on your behalf so that your query will be processed amicably and as quickly as possible."
Hmmm!0 -
Any company/person that uses exclamation marks to try and convince it's legit is dodgy as hell.
Dispute that payment through your bank and see where you get!!!
!!
!
Seriously though, dispute it, ignore that 'legal action' rubbish. The whole thing looks designed to scam the unwary.
Unfortunately if you HAVE signed up to something accidentally through a proper contract (even if the company is dodgy as sin and would sell your firstborn to make a buck), all you can do is take it to trading standards or whatever it is nowadays.0 -
Just looking at the posts above, and my mum had a couple of £24 and £48 payments go out of her account over the last 8 months at 2 month intervals, she phoned Web-assure.co.uk to find out what the payments were for and they said that they were for a Premium e-magazine she subscribed to when she renewed her driving license at 70, the first 12 months were free but charges would be due after the initial 12 months, the timings are correct and fit with her reapplying for her license after 70, and the payments being taken 12 months later. So it's concerning that they had such detailed information as well as her bank details to get the direct debit setup. I wonder if the #DVLA is aware of this and whether they have had any other reports of a Premium e-magazine?
As a follow up Web-assure.co.uk have agreed to pay back £96 (I'll believe it when i see it) but she is still £48 out of pocket.
In response to the initial question, 'Is this legit', my answer would have to be, 'No'0 -
I'd hazard a wild guess that instead of the real DVLA site she was on some lookalike site which offered to "renew her driving licence for her"...and surprise surprise she ended up scammed for some money.
There was some similar scam going on re EHIC cards which some companies/scammers with some genuine sounding/looking websites taking money from you to 'renew' - which was actually free if you went to the correct genuine NHS/HMG website.0 -
