I said they (Metrobank) issue Mastercard which are contactless, and then showed a picture of a YB debit card. It did not have a contactless symbol.

I am really sorry, you, and particularly your post #2, lost me entirely.

Why are you mentioning Metro when the thread is about YB/CB?

Which cards are you referring to when you say "they are contactless"?

What's the relevance of the card image you posted in post #2?

Metro Bank issue Mastercard retail, there is no issue with them, you can use it the same way as a Visa.

    They are contactless.

    It looks standard from YB.

The reason I mentioned Metro is because they issue Mastercards.

To show the poster that these cards were not crap as he seemed to think.

    They are contactless. Metro Mastercards.

The picture I posted was just to show YB issue Mastercards as standard.

    Sorry for any confusion.

That restriction is due to way RBS/NatWest (cards) are setup.

Many other 'online' debit cards work at Pay at Pump including Clydesdale / Yorkshire Maestro cards...

I nominate this for most confusing thread of the month!

Google 'Mastercard retail card' nil results because it doesn't exist.

    Debit card, yes.

Contactless with symbol for contactless, yes.

Can be used in retail outlets, yes.

    Can be used 'offline', yes.

Its just a Yorkshire Bank Mastercard Debit Card, and its contactless if it has the contactless symbol but if it hasn't it isn't.

They have been around for ages, they are standard.
  • my debit card came its contactless and offline :0)

Just thought I'd weigh in here, I work in a YB branch and want to explain why the debit card is referred to as a 'retail' card. It's simply because when branch staff order debit cards, on the drop down list there is the option for 'Retail Debit Mastercard' or 'Private Debit Mastercard'. Retail means a regular bank customer (blue card), private are black and are for those customers who have premium banking (high income earners). Also we have options for online or offline, and contact less or non contact less. All cards are now MasterCard, we no longer issue Maestro.

I recently opened a Yorkshire Bank Direct Current Account that came with a Contactless Debit MasterCard (Card Number begins 557349) but unlike my Halifax and TSB Contactless Visa Debit Cards it always authorises contactless payments.

    It's not a problem, it's just something I've noticed :)
