Since when have main dealers stopped doing clutches?

    They haven't.

One of our local mechanics often regales stories of life at a big city Honda dealership.

Service manager demanded everything done to book times or you were out the door. If the book says you could to do X in 12 minutes - you don't have time to *rse about with spanners - rip the damn cover off and get on with it...

That's pretty much how most dealerships work. Times set by a desk jockey who's never touched a spanner and only got the job because of a degree in media studies.

Most of them don't do BIG jobs, they don't have the skills, the staff or the time.

Any job that requires the engine and transmission to be lifted out or dropped underneath, is a BIG job. In most FWD cars, you can't separate the engine/clutch/gearbox without doing one of these... It means electrics disconnecting, parts removing, draining the coolant, disconnecting fuel lines, etc.

Your not going to get a dealership technician doing that, they basically only know how to plug in a diagnostics machine, perform an oil change and swap out failed bulbs.

You don't half talk some crap and it's obvious you know nothing about replacing a clutch.

And jobs like clutch replacements can be done in less than the book time. That's how mechanics make their bonuses.
