Nah, he's tunnelling his way out, backfilling as he goes. I thought everyone did this? :p

I've painted over various screw holes in places I've lived in over the years. In my current place the paintwork is only a few years old and in very good condition (and to our taste as well), so we haven't redecorated; I asked the previous owner what paint he used and bought some - I've now filled and painted over several screw holes I didn't want, and you would never know they were ever there. With old paintwork it's harder to match exactly but then it probably won't look any worse than the rest of the wall...

However, YMMV... I think some colours are more forgiving than others, and it also depends how much light shines on the wall to cause fading, whether people smoked in the room, etc.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

For the properties I rent out, I'd far rather the tenants didn't fill the holes with inappropriate quick-fixes, and that they leave it for me to do a "proper" job (or pay someone to do it right). I make it clear that I'll take responsibility for it from the outset. Nobody has taken the proverbial, and fixed their stamp collection up with picture hooks, and I haven't been left with walls that look like acne on a teenager.

When selling, I've nearly always smartened up a house before sale, and this often includes complete redecoration from top to bottom (not always regarded as a good way to make a profit on a house, but it works for me & the houses I sell). So, picture hooks tend to be relatively few, and in "sensible" places.

I also always leave spare paints - and a list of which rooms are painted in which colours, where the paint comes from, and the name of a recommended handyman.

I'd fill in the holes, but that's just me, I'd feel guilty if I left it a mess. After trial and error, I now tend to use polyfiller to fill the bulk of the hole and then use a bit of plaster to finish it off. As somebody said before, I found the polyfiller doesn't sand down very well (too rubbery), while if you let the plaster dry and sand it, the wall looks like new.

It can take a while to dry if you fill a sizeable hole. I apply it in layers if the hole is large and deep and let it dry thoroughly. Never had any problem with it.

Thanks for the replies. As there are several photos on one area of the wall with rawplugs and screws to hold them up (a little OTT i know), I will see if I can buy a tester pot and then fill them. Obs the off nail in the wall is fine, but when the pictures are all down on that wall, it may look screwtastic.

I haven't dared show the wife the plaster that broke off behind the picture in the kitchen . May have to give that a polyfiller job as well.

Our plaster is a nightmare. Bang a nail in and half the wall comes down.
