  • I think they are worth it, if i was going a little fast past one of those signs it would make me slow down.. just a reminder.. oh you have been lucky this time, its only a sign not a police officer with a speed detector

I agree, it can be a reminder to slow down, they are not meant to make money just slow people down.

Have a read over the couple of posts above - I wasnt referring to the slow down signs for making money, i was referring to spot fining motorists with speed cameras, instead of just enlightening people to what the speed limit might actually be?

As someone previously put, more visible speed limit signs themselves sometimes would help remind us. I've just been up through scotland from stranraer to the highlands and the amount of average speed speed cameras there are is frightening, but NOT ONCE was there a sign telling you what the speed limit actually was!!!

I think they're a good idea, and AFAIK surveys have found them to be more effective than fixed penalty generating speed cameras but I can't find the links.

    They're certainly less painful!

I am guessing you must be in the minority. Almost every single time I indicate to a speeding motorist that they are in excess of the speed limit, I get obscene guestures. All evidence I can gather indicates to me that most speeding motorists are fully aware that they are doing it and have no intention to stop unless forced.
    2 + 2 = 4
except for the general public when it can mean whatever they want it to.

At least these signs tell you something useful. My pet peeve are the signs on the motorway telling you to wear a seatbelt or not drink and drive. Of course you have to take your eyes off the road to read them (while going at 70mph!) in case it is something about an oil spill or whatever. Grrrr

I learned the hard way - at one stage I was 3 points away from being 'reduced to pedestrian'; the warning signs don't cost me anything - that's why I prefer the gentle, pain free reminder any time I stray over the limit.

To each their own, I suppose.

I think they are a superb idea, much better than the camaras as people dont feed anoyed when there going to fast, and speed camaras just make people slow down too fast. Although it would be a much better idea to have speed cameras in areas where they are needed, like my road, which during the day has alot of kids playing on it, but by night its more like Le Mans.

    >Am I correct in thinking that stretch of raod used to be 40mph?

a common misconception, in the 35 years I've been alive that road has always been a 30, however because of the width of it etc people assume its a 40, infact I agree I think it should be a 40. The 40 limit stops at the edge of Ballybeen - the Dunlady lights and it becomes a 30 when you're heading into town and vice versa becomes a 40 heading towards Ards

that bit outside stormont, sure its used for the speed cop on a bike to hide in the bus queue to catch people lol!!!

I think the electronic warning signs are a good idea - when used in an appropriate manner - however its one thing to be told by a little electronic sign to watch your speed (OR by PC Plod) and its totally another having another motorist judging that you are speeding and possibly driving 'carelessly' themselves to do so - flashing their lights OR using hand signals that involve you removing your hands from the wheel and distracting themselves also in the process.

As well as other people gesturing to me, another one that bemuses me is the people who sit at exactly 70mph on the motorway in the outside lane and wont pull over, supposedly stopping people 'breaking the law', yet breaking the law themselves to do so.
