Where can I get nice traditional pine bedroom furniture?
Currently have cheapo stuff but would like to upgrade to proper quality heavy duty stuff. Don't know where to look.I don't think it's fashionable anymore but don't care.
Bournemouth to Portsmouth to Salisbury area.

I'd suggest local auctions - not "fine antiques" but house clearances etc.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
It is fashionable if you get the nice waxed stuff. Not the old stylee varnished tat.
T'internet would give a wide range but you really need to feel the quality of the worksmanship. I know a decent place in York, but that's no help is it.
http://www.qualitypine.co.uk/ just found here from yell.com
Few tips, make sure all of the units are solid pine. Cheaper versions often use hardboard for backing and bottoms of drawers. Also, these days you can get knotless pine (at least the man at the Pine Warehouse on the A19 told me that) which does look a bit better.0 -
It might be worth looking in the local paper/yellow pages etc as we have a lot of independent guys making and selling pine furniture (we are in Nottingham), one guy is really good and like you we are planning to replace our items bit by bit.... amazingly we bought a huge pine table and chairs (made to our measurement) for the same price as a glass Ikea table and chair set so it can be great value as well0

When you are after good quality pine furniture some important things to check are:
1) That it is jointed correctly i.e. draws are held together with traditional dove-tail style joints, rather than staples or nails, this makes the furniture much stronger and shows that it was put together by somebody who knew what they were doing.
2) Also check the grain of the wood, for pine from slow growing pine forests (best quality) the lines in the wood (the grain) should be close together, making a denser heavier wood. Faster growing pine has a wider grain but consequently is a softer wood and therefore of a lower quality.
3) It's also worth having a close look at things like the hinges on doors and handles on draws, anything that looks cheap, weak or shoddy should be a warning sign that the whole piece of furniture may not be to standard.
4) There will be some knots in the wood, all part of the appeal of real wood. The thing to remember is that the item you end up with may well have more/less than the show item you see. If the wood has been treated properly before the furniture is made these should not really present a problem."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0
