Sky box extended warranty

I was cold called today by a representative claiming to be from Sky. He informed me that the standard 12 month warranty included in my contract was about to end and I needed to take out an extended warranty.
I informed him I was at work so couldn't really talk and after he waffled for 10 mins and despite telling him I wasnt interested, I cut him off.
My argument is that i pay Sky each month to provide a TV service so surely if the box breaks then they cant provide the service I'm paying for and Ill simply switch provider.
Ive only been with Sky for about a year and cant ever remember Virgin Media asking me to pay for a warranty.
Its got me wondering if I do actually need it or if they're just trying to get more money out of me? Any thoughts?

Always amazes me that people sign up for a service with no clear understanding of their contract
Maybe reading the contract Sky gave you or emailed you might answer your questions.
Why are people so lazy ????????I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Thanks for the constructive response. Most helpful!0

They are not sky, they say they are "calling on behalf of sky" or similar weasel-words.
You are quite right. If the system breaks down. call Sky. If Sky want you to pay for the repair tell them (and mean it) that you wish to cancel.
This worked for me and a £50 engineer visit magically became free. New receiver installed on the dish at no cost.0 -
As above, it's not Sky who are calling you but a company who have managed to get your details. We get the calls periodically but never take the warrenty.0

The company calling may or may not have been Sky, but Sky do try and sell a breakdown policy, I have received letters directly from Sky offering me the opportunity to insure my box and dish, frankly in my opinion, taking it is throwing money away, if you have Sky and are out of any minimum term , and it breaks down , if you don't have 'insurance' they will offer a engineer vist, it used to be £65, no idea what it is now, but telling them that you ain't paying for a repair when you already pay to watch, and they better cancel your subscription brings forward from them pretty quickly a 'free' visit/repair, they wil say it's a favour because you are such a great customer etc..but in reality they don't want you to leave and take with your the hundreds of ££'s per year you pay them0

Thanks all. I thought that was probably the case.0

With VM the box is leased and they maintain it. With Sky, the equipment (box, cabling, dish and LNB) is yours to keep, but any maintenance or replacement after the 12m warrranty expires is at your cost.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Unfortunately my elderly parents fell for this one. I've told them if they call again to tell them if the Sky Box fails to work, then they will have Sky taken out.
There doesn't seem to be anything out there to protect the vulnerable from these parasites. Caller display should be available for free to over 65's to help stop all this0 -
They normally "offer" the insurance plan at a discounted cost.....of ~ £100 per annum!! As a service visit is only £65 (BEFORE negotiation!) anyone who takes out one of these plans is ,in my view, barking!!!
I've had a box for nearly 7 years ,only had one call out, for a negotiated £25 -and that turned out to be a tree blocking the signal - the fitter even cut the offending branch down for me !!He also fitted a new LNB, and refixed cables.0 -

How would caller display help ? Even Sky use different phone numbers for different kinds of call.
Also, I am over 65 and don't think that anyone should have to pay out in order to give me free caller display.0
