I wouldnt put put faith in the tyre ratings. Oddly some Chinese ditch finders come with fairly good ratings but when tested bu independant magazines they usually score badly.

    Fair point...

So then the question becomes "Is there anything much wrong with just changing 1 tyre"?

If you are putting on the same brand and model, nothing, just take it easy for a couple of days until it scuffs in, and the oils and soaps used to get it on and out of the mould are gone.

If you mean change one tyre for a different make & tread pattern to the other 3, I wouldn't, but loads of people do, and they don't all die in a fireball when their car leaves the road over a cliff. ;)

(If you believe that all tyres are created equal, and give the same grip in all conditions, so the car won't be unbalanced in extremis, then you wouldn't be looking at different tread patterns in the first place.)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
