Open source email programme

I am just trying to set up an email account on a Linux-based operating system. Can anyone recomment a programme that I could download for free and use with my Virgin email account? I don't want to use Thunderbird, because I don't like the look of this. Is there anything that is similar in style to Outlook Express that will crucially work with both my Virgin account and Linux?

Evolution is usually the standard Gnome mail application.

And KMail the KDE version. So try looking for either of those two.

Which version of Linux are you using? Ubuntu?

  • Wolfman,
I am using Gnome. I tried to set up Evolution, when through the whole procedure and then ran slap into this:

NOTE: "smtpout.secureserver.net" is an SMTP relay server. In order to use this server to send emails, you must first activate SMTP relay on your email account. To do this, log in to your Account Manager and go to your Manager Email Accounts page to set up SMTP relay. If you do not have SMTP relay set up and your Internet Service Provider (ISP) allows it, you can use the outgoing mail server for your Internet Service Provider. Contact your Internet Service Provider to get this setting.

What on earth does this mean?
The Evolution programme keeps asking for a POP password. Where can I find this?

    Hi jolly-roger
It's possible to use your virgin email through the www without bothering with an email program.
Then just use it like a hotmail or yahoo mail.

    The website is:-http://www.virginmedia.com/account/sign-in.php

Thanks for that, although the link only puts you through to the Virgin.net home page, where there is a Mail tab that does indeed allow you to access your mail. I used this recently when on holiday to read my mail, but you are actually reading it off the server, which is a bit inconvenient. What is interesting about Virgin is that they have a help line which costs 25p/minute for any query to do with Microsoft. That goes up to £1/minute if you want to discuss Linux subjects!
By the way, I am gradually moving over to Linux Suse, which you can download for free. Why would anybody want to remain with Microsoft if their needs on computers are relatively simple? Vista is expensive and doesn't work with a lot of applications. Linux is free and people who use it fall over themselves backwards to help anybody with problems!

Just set up Mandriva on old PC (using now), configured KMail which was included, to test my little used VirginMedia addy.

Easier than OE to configure, recommended on initial impression.

BTW very impressed with Mandriva so far , comes with email, FFox, Burner ,DVD,Bluetooth and probably a few others.

Installed in about 40mins (cf.XP), and set up BB on the way. All on 500mhz,320RAM,10 GB HD. Plus as a novice I let it autoformat the HD, which it did, into system, home and swap, thus keeping all your work, pictures etc on a seperate partition.

    PLUS IT's FREE!!!
    Move along, nothing to see.
