dam its even longer than I guessed, theres 10 x 6 foot panels to the bottom of the yard. I might just buy something for £20 from gumtree then buy a petrol when I can afford to.

If you don't have a big lawn, an electric mower is fine.

I had a Flymo and it was hopeless. It was like steering a tank and it blew the cut grass all over the place! To change the height of the cut I had to hunt in the garage for where my husband had hidden the special blade removal tool, take the blade off, put in or take out spacers (after hunting for where he'd hidden the spare spacers), and put the blade back on ..... at which point it had inevitably started raining.

I replaced it with a Bosch .... which is fantastic. There's a simple lever at the side for changing the blade height. When it needs to be replaced, which I don't think will be for a long time yet, it'll be another Bosch. Unless I win the lottery. And move to a house with a sprawling garden. Then I'll get one of those fancy-shmancy ride on petrol jobs. Or better still hire a gardener!

    I'm confused now . . .
    Please don't be confused.
Grass boxes of nylon mesh / net constuction wear out and costly to replace.
Plastic grass collection boxes are far more durable.

If you know your way round a simple engine, you can get a second-hand petrol mower for very little off gumtree or whatever. Many years ago I picked one up for nowt - it was a "non-runner". Took me all of two evenings in my garage to strip the engine, clean it, de-coke it, new spark plug, fired it up and it ran like a good-un. That did me for many years.

I have had two Honda petrol mowers, the first lasted nearly thirty years and still had it original mesh grass collector, the one I have now is seven years old and the mesh grass collector is like new apart from being dirty.

This had been my experience of them - but I hasten to add not Honda.
Simply a bargain bucket petrol mower from a discount retail store the mower worked very well.
Dependant upon where the mower is kept - mice do enjoy a feast on the nylon mesh, where mine was kept in the greenhouse.
I stick by my original suggestion that plastic grass boxes are more durable.

Big garden then agree petrol. When we moved here 20 years ago we continued to use our electric hover mower for a couple of years before we bought a petrol. It does the lawns in a 1/4 of the time, no tripping over leads etc. We bought in Wickes and it was about £120. Not sure of the make but engine was a known brand and it's never broken down. It did take me a while to get the knack of pulling the starter thing!!

My Honda is from the late 1980s /early 90s, and similarly, my material grass box is fine.

I have tried other mowers....and they do not function as well as the Honda, which cost me £100 on ebay.

    Agree that Honda are superb.
Mine is 26 years old. Starts first or second pull on the cord. Never had to have any repairs. It has a mesh collection unit.
I recommend that you avoid petrol powered push mowers - check that it is self propelled.
    Forgotten but not gone.

forget electric for a large garden. You need a self propelled petrol. Second hand will be fine
